Suncrest Support Project

The Suncrest Support Project is a planned addition of a static VAR compensator station and approximately one-mile 230-kV transmission line into the existing Suncrest substation in San Diego County, CA. The project is needed to provide continuous reactive power response in the region.   The project is estimated to cost between $50m – $75m and be completed second quarter 2017.  In January 2015, NextEra was granted the contract in a solicitation under Order 1000 by the Cal-ISO.  It marked the first non-incumbent to win the bid within an incumbent’s service territory (San Diego Gas & Electric).  Cost containment language in the contract is cited as one of the key reasons NextEra’s bid was chosen for the project.
