Manitoba Hydro is planning a new transmission line that will stretch from Winnepeg, Manitoba, to the Canadian/Minnesota border. Called the Manitoba-Minnesota Transmission project, the 500-kV AC line will eventually connect to the Great Northern Transmission Line to be constructed by Minnesota Power. The project is being proposed as a means of increasing transmission capacity in the region, to earn revenue from the sale of surplus power and enhance reliability of electric supply in Manitoba through increased ability to import electricity. The project is part of the Public Utility Board’s Need for Alternatives to Review of Manitoba Hydro’s development plan of 2014. Early estimates place the project at near $350m and is expect to be in service by 2020. No set construction date has been released.
