The Charleston Area Improvements Project will rebuild five miles of an existing transmission line, construct a new substation and make significant upgrades to additional substations to provide the downtown area with continued reliable electric service. The economic development in Charleston has increased the need for a modern transmission system. The proposed upgrades will ensure continued reliable service to the residential, commercial and industrial customers in the area while building an electric system capable of handling the growing demand for power. Construction began in September 2016 and will be completed by the end of 2019. Majority of work will be done in or adjacent to existing right-of-way. The estimated project budget is $110 million.
