Houston (April 9, 2020) – CenterPoint Energy today issued the following statement regarding proposed increases in its Houston, South Texas and Texas Coast areas known as Gas Reliability Infrastructure Program (GRIP) filings:
Customers received notice of our applications either through a bill insert or via email. We filed the applications in early March, prior to current impacts of the Coronavirus (COVID-19).
We continue to be committed to providing customers throughout our service territory with safe and reliable service during the COVID-19 situation. During this challenging time, the safety and well-being of our customers, employees, contractors and communities remain our top priorities.
CenterPoint Energy files GRIP applications on an annual basis. The GRIP filings reflect investments the company makes to ensure our infrastructure continues to provide reliable service to our customers.
We are following the standard process for GRIP applications, which will be reviewed by our regulators. Given the circumstances, we continue to work closely with our regulators on the filings. The final outcome of the application requests and the implementation dates will be determined following regulatory review.
The proposed increases per bill for residential customers are:
- Houston Division – $0.89 per customer, per month
- South Texas Division – $1.55 per customer, per month
- Texas Coast Division – $0.67 per customer, per month
The proposed increase covers the company’s infrastructure, not the cost of natural gas, which CenterPoint Energy passes along to customers without markup. When natural gas costs go down, customers see those savings.
For customers concerned about their ability to pay, the company has also temporarily suspended natural gas service disconnections for nonpayment. Customers don’t need to contact the company to avoid disconnection. While we are working to support our customers during this uncertain time, natural gas customers are still responsible for making their bill payments. Natural gas customers who may need payment assistance, arrangements or extensions during and after the COVID-19 situation should call 1-800-752-8036 or visit the company’s website.
In response to COVID-19, the CenterPoint Energy Foundation will contribute $1.5 million to nonprofit organizations, agencies and causes that are committed to supporting those who have been disproportionately impacted by the pandemic.
