I&M to invest about $48m on rebuild project in Indiana

American Electric Power’s (NYSE:AEP) Indiana Michigan Power (I&M) on Sept. 11 said that it plans to invest about $48m on the Muncie-Anderson Transmission Line Rebuild Project in order to improve the electric transmission system in East Central Indiana.

According to a project fact sheet, the project includes rebuilding about 21 miles of double-circuit, 138-kV transmission line, retiring about five miles of overhead transmission line, and retiring about two miles of underground transmission line.

The project begins near the company’s Delaware substation in Muncie, Ind., and extends to I&M’s Madison substation in Anderson, the fact sheet noted.

The transmission infrastructure has reached an age where it needs to be replaced to better serve local customers, according to the fact sheet. I&M will replace existing lattice towers with new steel, single pole structures that will average 120 feet in height and be placed in the center of an approximate 100-foot-wide right of way (ROW) corridor, the fact sheet noted.

While most of the line will be rebuilt where it is currently located, existing easements will need to be updated and supplemented, the company said in its statement, adding that in limited areas, alternative study segments are proposed for re-routes that are being considered and evaluated for new construction.

An open house about the project will be held on Sept. 20 in Yorktown, the company said, adding that landowners are encouraged to attend and provide feedback on the project and alternative study segments, as that input is essential in helping the company determine the proposed final line route.

According to the project schedule, as noted on the fact sheet, ROW acquisition will occur in early 2018-early 2019; pre-construction activities will occur summer 2018-fall 2018; transmission line construction will occur fall 2018-spring 2020; the facilities will be placed in service in spring 2020; and restoration will occur in summer 2020.
