Eagle River Coal permits new area for Mine No. 1 surface job

The Illinois Office of Mines and Minerals plans a June 28 local public hearing on an April 6 application from Eagle River Coal LLC for a mine permit for the Mine No. 1 surface job near Harrisburg in Saline County.

The June 28 hearing will be at Southeastern Illinois College in Harrisburg.

The CEO of the company is Thomas W. Franks. This new area of operation would feature 230 acres of area stripping and 235 acres of highwall mining. A couple of prior OMM-issued permits covered other parts of the property.

U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration data shows that Mine No. 1 produced 162,931 tons of coal in the first quarter of this year and 732,448 tons in all of 2015.
