Reports: Coal exec Bennett Hatfield found dead of gunshot wound

Reports out of West Virginia said that coal executive Bennett K. “Ben” Hatfield, who worked in top positions for coal producers like Patriot Coal and International Coal Group, was found dead May 23 with a gunshot wound in a Mingo County, West Virginia, cemetery.

Mingo County Prosecuting Attorney Teresa Maynard said Hatfield’s death is being investigated as a homicide. Hatfield’s wife, who died in 2009, is buried at that cemetery. Later reports said that Anthony R. Arriaga of Delphos, Ohio, had been arrested and charged with the shooting. No motive was apparent.

Hatfield has a twin brother, Dennis Hatfield, who also has been a top executive with various coal companies.

Illinois coal producer Foresight Energy LP (NYSE: FELP) announced in June 2015 the appointment of Bennett K. Hatfield as a new independent member of the Board of Directors of its general partner and as a member of the board’s Audit Committee.
