Avangrid unit works on New York okay for 100-MW North Ridge Wind Project

Atlantic Wind LLC, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Avangrid Renewables LLC, filed a May 6 letter with the New York State Public Service Commission about plans for a Certificate of Environmental Compatibility and Public Need for the 100-MW North Ridge Wind Farm Project.

This project would be located in the Towns of Parishville and Hopkinton in St. Lawrence County, N.Y. A prospective certificate applicant is required to submit a proposed Public Involvement Program (PIP) plan for review by the Department of Public Service (DPS) staff at least 150 days prior to the filing of a Preliminary Scoping Statement. That proposed PIP accompanied the May 6 letter.

Avangrid Renewables is one of the largest producers of wind energy in the U.S. It is headquartered in Portland, Oregon, and has more than $10 billion of operating assets totaling more than 6,000 MW of owned and controlled wind and solar generation in the United States. Avangrid has developed over 50 wind farms in the United States alone including two in New York: Maple Ridge and Hardscrabble.

The proposed North Ridge project consists of the construction and operation of a commercial-scale wind power project, including the installation and operation of up to 40 wind turbines, together with the associated collection lines (below grade and overhead), access roads, meteorological towers, and operation and maintenance (O&M) building.

To deliver electricity to the New York State power grid, the applicant proposes to construct a collection substation adjacent to a National Grid interconnection switching station which will interconnect with National Grid’s Colton-to-Nicholville 115-kV transmission line. A 34.5 kV collection system will extend from the collection substation to the wind turbines.

The North Ridge Wind Farm Project will have a nameplate capacity of 100 MW, and is expected to operate at an annual net capacity factor (NCF) of approximately 32%. This means that over the course of a full calendar year the project would produce up to 280,000 megawatt hours (MWh) of energy (i.e., 100 MW x 24 hrs/day x 365 days x 32%).
