Swinerton building 30-MW Red Horse 3 solar project in Arizona

Swinerton Renewable Energy (SRE) said April 26 that it was selected by an affiliate of D. E. Shaw Renewable Investments LLC (DESRI) to construct the Red Horse 3 solar project.

Work on this 30-MW (ac) project, which is located near Willcox, Arizona, about 80 miles east of Tucson, began in December and is slated to be completed in the second quarter of 2016. The project features Sungrow central inverters, Jinko modules, and Array Technologies Inc. single-axis trackers. The power generated by the facility is expected to connect directly into the Tucson Electric Power grid.

Red Horse 3 is being built on land adjacent to the prior Red Horse 2 project. In addition to engineering, procurement, and construction duties, SRE has a 10-year agreement to provide operations and maintenance services for both projects. Blymyer Engineers has been contracted to provide engineering services alongside the SRE team.

“Red Horse 3 is yet another example of a successful joint effort with DESRI to bring both jobs and affordable, clean energy to the residents of Arizona,” said George Hershman, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Swinerton Renewable Energy. “We are also excited to partner with Sungrow, an innovative developer of energy conversion products, to use their inverters for the first time.”

“Sungrow is happy to be a part of Red Horse 3 and anticipates this project to be the first of many renewable projects with the Swinerton and DESRI teams as we serve this growing industry,” said Professor Renxian Cao, CEO of Sungrow.

Swinerton Renewable Energy offers engineering, procurement, construction, and other services for solar photovoltaic plants throughout North America. SRE has delivered over 1 GW solar projects and its SOLV team manages over 1.5 GW of PV plants.

Sungrow is one of the world’s leading PV inverter manufacturers with over 20 GW installed globally. Founded in China in 1997 by Professor Renxian Cao, Sungrow is a global leader in research and development in the PV inverter industry, with a broad product lineup certified to operate for residential, commercial, and industrial-scale PV plants.

D. E. Shaw Renewable Investments and its affiliates own and manage long-term contracted renewable energy assets in North America with a portfolio of more than 20 projects totaling approximately 1,000 MW of capacity. DESRI is a member of the D. E. Shaw group, a global investment and technology development firm with more than $37 billion in investment capital as of March 1, 2016, and offices in North America, Europe, and Asia.

With expertise in solar, industrial facility design, and environmental services, Blymyer Engineers has completed more than 500 projects and 2.3 GW of engineered solar plants worldwide.
