PJM works on interconnection for 80-MW Moyock Solar project in North Carolina

PJM Interconnection has issued a System Impact Study covering an application by Moyock Solar LLC for the interconnection of an 80-MW solar facility in North Carolina to the Virginia Electric and Power Co. (VEPCO) system.

The study, dated September 2015 and a mid-point in the PJM queue process, is to determine a plan, with approximate cost and construction time estimates, to connect the subject generation project to the PJM network at a location specified by Moyock Solar.

The developer has proposed a solar facility located on Puddin Ridge Road in Moyock, N.C. The installed facilities will have a total capability of 80 MW with 56 MW of this output being recognized by PJM as capacity. The proposed in-service date for this project was Oct. 31, 2015. This study does not imply a VEPCO commitment to this in-service date. This project, under queue #AA1-133, will interconnect with the transmission system via a new three breaker ring bus switching station that connects on the Hickory–Shawboro 230-kV line.

Moyock Solar applied Sept. 2 to the North Carolina Utilities Commission for a Certificate of Public Convenience and Necessity authorizing construction of an 80-MW (ac) solar facility to be located in Currituck County. It is to be a single-axis tracking, ground-mounted solar photovoltaic system consisting of approximately 367,213 solar PV modules and will utilize fifty-four 1.56-MW inverters set to 1.482 MW each.

The facility is projected to come online in phases with the complete system online by Dec. 31, 2016, said the North Carolina application. Moyock Solar said it is in discussions to sell the output through a negotiated Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) to Virginia Electric and Power d/b/a Dominion North Carolina Power (DNCP) or to one or more retail customers in deregulated states that allow for such sales, or to sell the output in the PJM Interconnection market. The applicant said it has submitted an interconnection request to PJM.
