Alpha cuts a total of 71 employees at several coal mining operations

Alpha Natural Resources (NYSE: ANR) confirmed May 19 that subsidiary Enterprise Mining’s EMC #9 underground mine in Knott County, Ky., and the Roxana prep plant in Letcher County, Ky., reduced their workforce by 17 employees.

Knox Creek Coal’s Tiller #1 underground mine in Tazewell County, Va., eliminated 35 positions. Mill Branch Coal’s Dorchester and North Fork underground mines in Wise County, Va., and Letcher County, Ky., reduced the number of employees by 19.

A total of 71 employees are affected by these cutbacks. The company noted that no mines were idled, with only workforces reduced. This was a market-driven reduction. These operations are not sustainable at current levels given market conditions that continue to deteriorate, Alpha said.
