Signal Peak working on new refuse area for Montana longwall mine

Signal Peak Energy LLC has applied at the Montana Department of Environmental Quality for a major revision of its coal mine permit, covering a second coal waste disposal area (called WDA2).

Implementation of the proposed major revision would result in approximately 290 acres of additional disturbance within the approved mine permit area in Musselshell County, said the agency. It is taking comment on this application, which was filed in August 2014, until April 24.

Signal Peak operates the Bull Mountains Mine No. 1 longwall operation, with U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration data showing that the mine produced 7.9 million tons in 2014, down from 8.7 million tons in 2013.
