FPL St. Lucie 1 starts refueling outage

A spokesperson for NextEra Energy (NYSE:NEE) utility Florida Power & Light (FPL) confirmed March 24 that Unit 1 of the St. Lucie nuclear plant was taken offline the day before for a regularly-scheduled refueling and maintenance outage.

The spokesperson declined to offer other details on the planned outage. Unit 2 continues to operate at full power.

St. Lucie 1 is pressurized water reactor (PWR) located in Jensen Beach, Fla. It is listed with a nameplate capacity of more than 1,000 MW, according to GenerationHub data.

The spring refueling season is well underway for nuclear power plants. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) data shows that 13 of the nation’s 99 nuclear units are currently offline. Most of them are down for planned refueling and maintenance.
