The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission on March 30 accepted a Feb. 5 filing by PJM Interconnection of an executed interconnection service agreement with Valley View Spindle LLC, which is developing a 20-MW flywheel project, and transmission owner PPL Electric Utilities Corp.
The Valley View ISA facilitates the interconnection to the PJM system of 20 MW (Maximum Facility Output) at the Valley View Flywheel Station Facility located in Jessup Borough, Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania. The Valley View ISA indicates that Valley View shall be an Energy Resource permitted to inject 20 MW (nominal) into the system.
Under this agreement, Valley View must, on or before Dec. 31, 2016, demonstrate commercial operation of all generating units. The project would consist of flywheels connected through 110-kW inverters. Twenty inverters are connected to one of ten step-up transformers. This project is in PJM Queue Position #Z1-098.
A flywheel system is a form of temporary energy storage, where electricity is used to spin a flywheel, with the kinetic energy from that spinning then available to later generate electricity to compensate for grid fluctuations.
