ENMAX Balzac GP Inc. (EBGP), a subsidiary of ENMAX Corp., applied Aug. 8 at the Alberta Utilities Commission for an approval related to a partial buy of a 111-MW, gas-fired power plant.
ENMAX Balzac has recently executed agreements with EnCana Corp. to purchase 100% of EnCana’s 50% ownership in the nominal 111-MW gas-fired Balzac power plant. The Alberta Energy and Utilities Board had jointly granted Pan Canadian Petroleum Ltd. and Canadian Occidental Petroleum Ltd. approval to construct and operate the power plant. That approval was later superseded by another approval for an Encana and Nexen Inc. ownership name change for the Balzac Power Plant.
ENMAX said it expects that the independent assessment supporting the proposed purchase of the generating unit will be provided to the Minister of Energy in August 2014. EBGP requests that the commission grant a transfer of the prior approval for the project, to be effective on the date the ministerial authorization is received.
The application said: “The Balzac plant will continue to be operated by existing Nexen Inc. plant personnel who are familiar with its operations. There are no anticipated changes or disruptions expected in the operations of this plant during the transition.” The application indicates that Nexen would continue to own 50% of the plant.
