The following is a statement from NEI President and CEO Marvin Fertel on U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Commissioner William Magwood becoming the director-general of OECD’s Nuclear Energy Agency in Paris, effective in September.
“Commissioner Magwood brings exceptional credentials to the position of director-general. He is serving his second term as a commissioner at the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and he was the longest-serving director of nuclear energy within the U.S. Department of Energy. Throughout his career, Commissioner Magwood has been an advocate of international cooperation in nuclear energy technology and of strengthening science and technology education. His leadership in these areas, and in assuring public participation in the policy process, will be important attributes as he prepares to lead OECD’s Nuclear Energy Agency.
“As Commissioner Magwood prepares to leave the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, it is vital that the agency maintain its complement of qualified, collegial commissioners. Commissioner George Apostolakis has expressed his willingness to continue to serve at the NRC and we encourage the White House to nominate him for a second term before June 30. Also, the administration should begin an immediate search for a highly qualified candidate to replace Commissioner Magwood upon his departure this fall.”
