Imperial seeks okay to connect its Alberta plant to the grid

The Alberta Utilities Commission on March 25 went out for public comment on a Feb. 18 application from Imperial Oil Resources Ventures Ltd. to connect its already approved 84-MW phase 1 generator, located at the Kearl oilsands site, to the Alberta Interconnected Electric System (AIES).

This power facility would serve an in-development oilsands processing operation. The 84-MW generator is in construction and expected to be commissioned by the end of this year.

The plan is to add a second cogeneration unit of 100 MW in size by the end of 2016 and a third unit of 30 MW in capacity by the end of 2020. The commission in 2011 approved all three phases of the cogeneration project.
