Telluride Energy pursues two California hydroelectric projects

Telluride Energy LLC applied Jan. 15 at the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission for preliminary permits on two small hydroelectric projects in California.

A preliminary permit gives a developer a three-year exclusive right to explore project feasibility, with a license application then needed if the decision is to proceed with the project.

One preliminary permit application was for the proposed Buchanan Dam Hydroelectric Project in Madera County, Calif. Buchanan Dam was built in 1975 and remains functioning to date. The existing dam is approximately 1,750 feet across and has a structural height of 218 feet. According to the recently-released U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) hydro resource report, “Hydropower Resource Assessment at Non-Powered USACE Sites,” currently there is no hydroelectric generation related to the project, the application noted.

The proposed turbine-generator would be attached to the existing intake tower at the dam. The exact turbine type and capacity will be evaluated through the engineering feasibility study. According to the recently issued USACE report, the site will have a generating capacity of 2.98 MW.

The other application for a preliminary permit covers the proposed Hidden Dam Hydropower Project, also to be located in Madera County. Hidden Dam was built in 1974 by the Corps and remains functioning to date. The existing dam is approximately 5,730 feet across and has a structural height of 184 feet. According to the same new Corps report, currently there is no hydroelectric generation related to the project.

The proposed turbine-generator would be attached to the existing intake tower at the dam. The exact turbine type and capacity will be evaluated through the engineering feasibility study. According to the Corps report, the site will have a generating capacity of 2.48 MW.
