A joint team of officials from both the Western Area Power Administration (Western) and U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) have opened a comment period regarding a March memo from DOE Secretary Steven Chu.
The 60-day comment period ends Jan. 22, 2013, with a projected final recommendation made to Chu by late January or early February 2013.
Chu’s memo calls for changes in the operation of its four power marketing administrations (PMAs), which market and distribute hydropower to 60 million people in 34 states. Some customers of Western, which is one of those PMAs, are also served by Basin Electric.
Western primarily sells hydropower generated by federal dams in the Missouri River Basin and other western states to rural electric cooperatives, municipal utilities and tribes — collectively known as “preference customers.” Basin Electric is a supplemental power supplier to Western’s preference customers.
