Orlando, FL, December 7, 2012 – ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, today announced that it has successfully commissioned a Symphony control system upgrade for the Pratt & Whitney FT8 TWINPAC turbines located at Iberdrola’s Klamath Cogeneration Facility.
ABB was selected as the turnkey supplier for the upgrade due to its prowess in developing turbine control solutions for 3rd party turbines, its long-standing history of providing quality service to the site, and for the inherent advantages of its simple, scalable, seamless and secure control system. The solution included the design and implementation of enhanced control logic and graphics, development of the advanced surge protection module, start-up and commissioning.
“ABB engaged us in a partnering approach and displayed a high level of determination and commitment to complete this challenging project,” said Ray Martens, Plant Managing Director, Iberdrola. “ABB’s reliable, open and intuitive control system better positions our lean organization to handle the challenges associated with operating these machines. As a result, we made vast improvements to the availability, reliability and overall performance of the units.”
“ABB is an expert in replacing cumbersome and expensive ‘black box’ control systems provided by turbine OEMs with our more open control system,” added Mark Taft, Senior Vice President and General Manager, ABB Power Generation North America. “This is a key benefit with significant bearing on our client’s key performance indicators. We appreciate the confidence and cooperation extended to us by Iberdrola, and we look forward to bringing this same option of improved performance and maintainability to the many other operators of the Pratt & Whitney FT8 turbine.”
This announcement was made in advance of the Power-Gen International 2012 exhibition and conference in Orlando. ABB is exhibiting in booth #2000 in the Orange County Convention Center.
