Alberta transmission line debate continues

The need for transmission line expansion is a hotly debated topic right now in Alberta.

Currently there are plans for Altalink to expand the power transmission line from Edmonton to Calgary through two high capacity HVDC lines. Currently the system runs on six lines between Edmonton and Red Deer and seven lines between Red Deer and Calgary. According to an Alberta Energy System Operator (AESO) report this system has not been upgraded since the 1990s.

Currently fighting against this expansion is Wildrose Party MLA for Rimbey-Rocky Mountain House-Sundre, Joe Anglin. Anglin believes that the lines are unnecessary at this time and are a waste of taxpayer money.

“There aren’t both sides of this, it’s a very complicated issue,” said Anglin when asked about the proposed transmission lines.
