The Ohio Division of Mineral Resources Management in April issued five mine permits, including one to Oxford Mining Co. LLC for the new Shugert South strip mine in Belmont County.
A list of issued permits released by the agency, updated through May 1, shows that the permit was issued on April 9 for Shugert South. This is a 265.6-acre strip mine that will work the #9 and #11 coal seams. Oxford Mining is a unit of Oxford Resource Partners LP (NYSE: OXF) that operates several strip mines at any one time in Ohio.
The other four permits issued in April, all for additions to already-permitted operations, are:
- Rosebud Mining Co., controlled by coal operator J. Clifford Forrest, got a permit on April 3 for 845.6 additional underground acres in the #6A coal seam for the DM-10 room-and-pillar mine in Jefferson County. Rosebud has no DM-10 mine currently listed with the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration under that name.
- Rosebud Mining got an April 13 permit for 375 acres of new underground reserves in the #6 coal seam for the Tusky deep mine in Harrison County. MSHA data shows that Tusky produced 149,493 tons in the first quarter of this year and 572,908 tons in all of 2011.
- Oxford Mining was issued on April 23 a 25-acre permit for the Stasburg coal slurry disposal area in Tuscarawas County.
- Sterling Mining Corp. got an April 30 approval on a permit for 2,921.3 underground acres in the #6 coal seam for the Sterling West room-and-pillar mine in Carroll and Jefferson counties. There is no Sterling West mine listed with MSHA. Sterling Mining, controlled by W. Thomas Mackall, has two deep mines listed with MSHA – Shean Hill and Carroll Hollow #6 – and the South Mine/Washplant facility, all located in Ohio.
