Some residents oppose eminent domain for power line project

Dozens of residents showed up to voice their concerns about a new PPL transmission line at a public hearing in Dalmatia, Northumberland County Wednesday night.

PPL Electric Utilities is trying to get approval from the Public Utilities Commission to use eminent domain to acquire nine properties along the Susquehanna River in Northumberland and Snyder counties. The utility wants to install a transmission line to connect two other lines on opposite sides of the river.

But residents in a number of different counties came out to say they don’t want the line. They’re concerned about their properties and the environment. And they said the new transmission line is not needed.

“I can’t help but think about the subjective nature of wants versus needs,” said one resident. “Has PPL actually communicated directly with each of the customers they intend to serve with this proposed power line?”
