B.C. Hydro expects to begin construction this week of a $709-million Interior-Lower Mainland transmission line project, the regional district learned Thursday.
The 500-kilovolt, 250-kilometre project will ensure the Crown corporation meets electrical demand in the Lower Mainland and on Vancouver Island, areas where the need for power is forecast to grow by 50 per cent in the next two decades.
Slated for completion by 2015, much of the new line will parallel an existing right-of-way between the Nicola substation and the Meridian substation in Coquitlam, said Melissa Holland, project manager.
“It’s been a long road, but we are expecting to begin work soon, if not tomorrow,” Holland said.
